We are looking for people who want to support a child for his or her secondary education. The school fees amount to 200 € per year and do make a huge difference! Some children however require schooling at a boarding school where they receive room and board. Fees for the boarding schools are approximately 450 € per year.Through video messages and letters the sponsorship becomes a very personal and intercultural experience. Through our voluntary engagement we are able to guarantee that 100% of donations for educational sponsorships will go directly to the respective child and its education.
Why an educational sponsorship with us?
+ We know our children personaly and have lived with them in Uganda
+ We work voluntarily with high commitment towards empowering Ugandan youth
+ lowest administrative costs – no donations flow into marketing or administration
+ cultural exchange between you and your sponsored child through video messages and letters from Uganda
How a sponsorship works
Through an educational sponsorship you are able to support an Ugandan child in need for his or her education in a good secondary school. It takes four years up till Ordinary Levels and another two years for Advanced-Levels education. After, a possibility for practical training or university studies exists.
School fees at Ugandan secondary schools are comparably very high. With an average salary of little more than one Dollar a day, 200€ per year make education more than a luxury good. However, this amount can make a huge difference and means a great chance.
Nevertheless, many children need to go to a boarding school, where they also receive accommodation and meals because they have no relatives where they could live. Boarding schools average to about 450 € per year. That is only 37,50 € per month for the complete life of a teenager.
We are not aiming at taking away the self-responsibility and autonomy of children to lead their lives but we are empowering youth to be able to lead dignified and content lives, being able to help themselves and their fellows. You will furthermore receive report cards that inform you about your child’s performance in school.
School system in Uganda
The Ugandan school system is designed after the British model. The school year starts in February and goes until the end of November. Jangu e.V. is asking for sponsorships to be paid until January. Then we will transfer the fees to the respective schools (if they have a bank account) or to our partners, who give out the school fees directly to the children or their guardians. In the past this system has been proven to be very effective and we can guarantee that all the money reaches is used for the benefit of the child.
What the money is used for
Secondary school education is not free in Uganda, although a system of Universal Secondary Education is technically being implemented. School fees are the biggest costs. They cover the teacher’s salaries, the teaching materials, maintaining the buildings and feeding the students. Scholastic materials, books, uniforms, toiletries and personal items are also needed, as well as a small pocket money for each student.
Boarding school also require that students bring a mattress, Flash light, mosquito net and other items. Fees also include a general medical coverage.
I want to become a sponsor!
We are currently looking for new educational sponsors! If you want to support a child with us, then just write us an informal message to info@jangu.org
We are looking forward to answering your questions and will clarify all details in direct contact.
We do not issue a sponsorship contract. This means that you can end your sponsorship at any time. However, we are sure that once you get to know your child, this will not happen.
Successful running sponsorships
Nabambezi Ruth was the best in her class in 2010 – Congratulations!
Since 2007 sponsorships have linked orphans from Kankobe to sponsors from all over the world. We currently take care of more than 60 children in different schools and different parts of Uganda. 15 students have already succesfully completed Ordinary-Levels through Jangu e.V. and our first generation of sponsored youth is currently doing their A-Level examinations.
Most children highly value the chance given to them and many are among the best of their class. For example our Ruth Nabambezi in 2010 and 2011 was the best out of 97 students. Congratulations! With these skills she has high chances to gain one of the very few government scholarships for studying at one of the best Ugandan universties.
To keep in mind
Possible problems regarding sponsorships:
Despite all efforts setbacks concerning the sponsorships can occur due to diseases like malaria or AIDS. Since the average age at maternity is 17 years in Uganda pregnancy can interrupt the education process or even lead to dropouts. Nevertheless, Jangu e.V. will continue to support young mothers and their children as well as those who have fallen ill.
Viewing sponsorships critically:
The orphans have had a tough time and will appreciate the opportunity to go to school. They themselves would like to support needy orphans in the future. Jangu e.V. wants to create a cycle of helping people to help themselves because education in our opinion is the best way of empowerment. Sponsorships, however, cannot correct mistakes that have been made in the development policy of the past and should not be used to clear one’s conscience.
Correspondence via letters and packages:
We wish to encourage the correspondence between sponsors and sponsored children in order to create learning opportunities. The children will tell you about their lives and it would be desirable if you are inclined to do the same in return. Photos can help to give someone else an understanding of a foreign world.
By experience we recommend to refrain from sending presents by post to your sponsored child. This can lead to jealousy and marginalization even though you mean well without a doubt. If you still plan on sending a package to your sponsored child please refer to us in advance.
